| Edna* had a beautiful (Christmas) tree this year and a good program. Santa Claus came in with a lot of bell ringing and Dean stayed close to mamma. He didn't know if he liked the old man or not, until Santa gave him an orange, a popcorn ball and a sack of candy and nuts. Helen Blackburn, Anna Vestly, and Gerty Bedell were the most popular girls when the dancing started." From God's Mountain: The Last of the Hahn's Peak Homesteaders by Rose Wheeler, 1973, published by the Steamboat Pilot.. *Edna is school teacher, Edna Trullinger, and a sister to my mother's (Catherine Hartt Keffeler's) aunt Etta (Spragg) McCarger. |
